I'm interested in seeing what everyone's first RPG was. Please click on the poll to the right --------->
Was it D&D, the father of all RPG's?
Was it Traveller, one of the earliest Sci-Fi games?
Personally I was introduced into RPGs by playing a game of Chill! An awesome Horror RPG (my first character was killed and eaten by a werewolf in the first game).
Or was it Pendragon, Tunnels & Trolls, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Robotech, Doctor Who, Gamma World, Talislanta.....etc.
Let me know and post a little about your experience!
I'm a Moldvay red-boxer. Got it at Toys 'R' Us, where I also got the Cook blue box and all the AD&D books and modules that I still own (except the PHB, which I re-purchased at a used book store a few years back).
ReplyDeleteGotta vote "other" on this one, my first foray into roleplaying was smack dab in the middle of the 80's with Twilight 2000.
ReplyDeleteMatt - I miss finding RPGs in toy stores! I used to buy D&D minis and stuff at Kay Bee Toys.
ReplyDeleteGyro - I forgot about Twilight 2000! I had the original box set, but only played it a couple of times.
AD&D, followed by Traveller. Traveller's still my favourite game and I still run the occasional game of CT. Have some Mong Traveller books, which I like, but missed the versions in between.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, we played TFT, C&S, C&SII, LRS, Bushido (a friend still runs this), Champions, EPT. Tried Aftermath and GURPs - the former would have been a great game but was made needlessly complicated and the latter was too similar to what we were doing with Champions to make the switch, though great source books.
D&D, Holmes box set - it was my older brother's. He acquired it shortly after the set came out so he was around 12-14 I was around 8-10 y.o.... and I confiscated it. I was attracted by the art first - that's what drew me in - then I learned the game. At first, my friends and I didn't know what the hell we were doing - we were little kids and didn't understand some of the rules. We'd make alot of stuff up. And as we got older, we started to truly learn and understand the game. That's my first experiences with an rpg.
ReplyDeleteKobold - Traveller is great! I haven't played it as often as I'd like.
ReplyDeleteMarjasall - Thanks for sharing! Holmes Basic is one of my prized posessions! I was planning on running Holmes soon.
